June 28, 2013 planned route, Day 42

Well here we go, the very last leg that will put me back in Virginia and ending the longest trip ever in my lifetime. I will be honest in saying that even I have hard time believing that I can pull this off. I have done 3 one month trips on a motorcycle with the wife and it is always fun when you have someone to share the experience with, but this time it is a solo adventure. Even I didn’t think she could or would put up with riding in conditions that would be very challenging. Cod, hot, rain, and possible snow, so why would she. This is a bucket list item for me and something my dad dreamed about but never got his chance. Life is short and I know it, so I’m going to live it. Leg length today will be 571 miles, grand total for the trip will be at least 16,469. Damn!

June 25, 2013 planned route, Day 39

So here I am, the last day of my adventure as I see it and then the 3 day sprint back to Virginia. The plan today is to pickup Debbie Fanatia and give her a ride on the R1200GSA to the highest Asphalt road in the united States. The hard surface road peaks out at 14,240 feet on top of Mt.Evans. I have made the climb in a SUV and on a motorcycle and I will tell you if you scared of heights, this will make your stomach tighten a bit. The last 4 to 5 miles the road narrows and there are no guard rails. It gives the appearance that you could roll off the edge and roll, roll, forever. After we accomplish this mission, then the plan is to ride up through Rocky mountain National Park and  hope that the road is open. I have tried twice before to ride completely through the park only to be stopped by snow. If we make it through the park, then we will just ride the countryside until we end up back her home. Lunch and Dinner will be on her to research and figure out since she is the local. Today’s run should be very relaxing and my second round robin of this trip. Planned mileage for today is 282 miles bring trip total to 14809 miles.

June 24, 2013 planned route, Day 38

Today I plan to turn east and head toward Denver. Before that though, I will be driving through Dinosaur National Monument and maybe see some old bones. not sure how long I can stay and look around, but it would be cool to see some fossils. After that it is due eastbound through the ski town of Steamboat Springs and into Denver. In Denver the plan is to meet up with Debbie, a childhood friend, and do dinner and talk about the next day. Don’t want to spoil it for you, so you’ll have too read the next post to see what is up with that. The sad news is that after today and tomorrows run, this trip to me is over and the sprint home begins. Today’s leg should be 354 miles bring the total trip to 14527miles.

Today I will be leaving Doug and Yellowstone National Park. I will be driving on another Road Runner route that will take me through Jackson Hole and Scenic highway 191. Should be another beautiful ride through some of the best scenery in our nation. At the end of the day I should end up n Vernal, Utah. Today’s ride will be 488 miles and will bring total ride to 14173 miles.

June 22, 2013 planned route, Day 36

This will be my Birthday route! 52 and still act like I’m 15, isn’t life grand? Today I will exit Montana and enter Wyoming and tour a bit of Yellowstone national Park. It is also possible that at the end of the day I will actually run into an old friend. Doug Meikle and wife will be out here camping/fishing in and around Yellowstone. I’m hoping that I can at least have dinner in a campground or at a restaurant so we can catch up a bit. Doug and I use to work together and he has since retired and is enjoying life. We also have ridden motorcycles together, the best being Nova Scotia and back. Today’s run should be 366 miles bringing the total ride to 13685 miles.

June 21, 2013 planned route, Day 35

Day 35 and the completion of 5 weeks on the road. Will I be ready to go home at this point or will I be hungry for more riding. I think it will depend on two factors, one, how the equipment holds up and two, weather. I know my last trip that I was out on the road for 4 weeks, I was not ready to end my riding, but in the same breadth it was good to be home. Today’s ride will take me through two Indian Reservations and a Glacier park. It will also be the first time riding in Montana which I have heard and seen picture of, that are very pretty. I will also be cruising by Flathead Lake which is the largest natural fresh water lake in the United States. I will end up in Great Falls Montana at the end of the day. This leg will be 366 miles bring trip total to 13,319.

June 19, 2013 planned route, Day 33

Bucket-List-Road-Northwest-Passage-Scenic-BywayThis could be a very long day. Because through my research I could not find a secure place that I could count on in Hell’s Canyon park, I stayed a little further away. So I will have to do a little extra riding to reach the park. Once there, unless I figure it out later, I will have to find my way around with a park map because my GPS software is not giving a good indication on what roads are passable. My next goal is a Bucket list road according to Road Runner Magazine. It runs through Idaho and one sign on the road indicates caution, 99 miles of curvy roads. Hmm, that sounds yummy!! Some of the roads, according to the article, follow the same paths that Lewis and Clark followed heading west. Looking forward to this entertaining road. The planned mileage for this leg is 442 miles bringing my trip total to 12955

June 18, 2013 planned route, Day 32

Today I will be leaving the Crater Lake area but before I leave, I will be curling around the east and north side of the lake to take in the views. Beyond this I’m not 100% sure what I will see along this route and the primary purpose is to get me closer to Hell’s Canyon. My intention are to ride through Hell’s canyon and see the deepest gorge in the United States, but I will have to do more research on best routes to see what I want to see. At the end of today’s route I will end up in Baker City, Oregon and will be staying in a very old hotel that was opened in 1889. Looking forward to seeing the inside woodwork and all the architecture that was used to build this building. Today’s leg is a short one at 355 miles.

June 17, 2013 planned route, Day 31

This one of the legs of my journey that I’m really looking forward to. This is one of the exact routes that I was suppose to run 2011 when Lori and I did the cross country run on the Honda Valkyrie but because of snow we diverted. Today I leave Crescent City California and will wiggle through Smith River Nia Park and then rolling country of upper California and Oregon. ultimate destination is Crate Lake. Rain, Snow, Sleet, or cold, I will make Crater Lake this time around. Click here to see some pictures. Depending on weather and how I feel, I will either stay at the lodge or camp. I;’m thinking that camping will be very high on my list for this stop. Total run today will be 363 miles.

Just an update on Alaska Status

May 18th is sneaking up on me very quickly and before I know it, I will be on my adventure. My wife was talking to one of her friends the other day and the woman was telling Lori, you really shouldn’t let him go. To my wife’s credit, she turned to the lady and said, “This is number one on his bucket list and I could never tell him that.” “Besides, if I did, he would be more of a bear afterwards and I wouldn’t want that either.” She’s right, it is number one, because it is a promise I made over my Dad’s Casket when he passed July of 1999. Seems like yesterday we were watching my two boys play All-star baseball, which he dearly enjoyed, then drove home and died of a heart attack. My Dad always use to say one thing that I remembered and at the time it didn’t make me smile, but now it does. “You never have a promise of tomorrow.” Then he would add some wisdom to whatever the topic was at the time. His dream is now my dream, to drive to Alaska. His was in an RV and mine is with a motorcycle. Maybe when I grow up, I will drive to Alaska in an RV.

I’m putting the finishing touches on my route and I fear that if anything happens to delay me, I will not have enough time to do everything that I want to do. There are just to many things to see and too many miles to cover. The perk the way that I do things is that I can always just waypoint from point to point and cut out an entries day route in a manner of minutes. I have about 11 days to finalize routes and I will be done.

Motorcycle is ready. The GPS tracker made by Spot is installed for the wife. Today I went to Fredericksburg BMW open house and bought a new pair of heated socks, they’ve change to look like gloves, and some more straps. These straps have allowed me to find a place to put my tires. When I took it for a short ride afterwards, it worked. I was amazed and thinking about it, it might just help balance the bike distributing more weight to the front. I have lot’s extra weight on the back and nothing in the front, so this might help. I will ride it to work and on a trip before I leave to test the setup further. For those that work with me, just look for the big black gray ugly bike with crap hanging all over it.

I have all my tools set out and waiting for a pouch to store them in. All my camping gear is ready except for one item, and it should be here next week. I order a new tire iron and hope that it will do the job. Lastly, after some comments on Facebook about my tire mounting system, I have decided to order tubes for insurance. I will not be able to pack every safety device that everyone wants me to carry, but I feel confident that I will be warm and safe on the side of the road if I cannot fix it.

I think I’m ready, so come on May 18th. The pictures below were from my test mount. I now have different straps and they work very well.

June 12, 2013 planned route, Day 26

At this point I still have a lot of things to see and a lot of miles to cover. Today’s plan is to stop at the TouraTech facilities that I buy motorcycle parts from and visit the showroom. You never know, they might put me on the their Facebook page for the day. By the end of the day I plan to camp somewhere very near the mountain of Mt. Rainer.

June 8, 2013 planned route, Day 22

The plan today is to stay in Vancouver. Also during this time, I want to go see Capilano Suspension Bridge that is right in the middle of the city. I will also fix anything that needs fixing and wash cloths.

June 7, 2013 planned route, Day 21

Today leg will take almost back to the lower 48 states of the United States. Leg length will be 471 miles and from what I‘ve read, this leg should be a very beautiful ride. After today’s ride my trip length completed 10,105 miles. I’m thinking that I will spend at least 1 complete day in Vancouver without moving to Seattle, but I will make this decision on the fly and it will likely have more to do with weather, how I feel, and what needs to be done to the R1200GSA.

The last of my new routes from the days I saved from Alaska. I will cross back into the United States and land in Bremeton. This will set me up to visit Touratech facility that sells motorcycle gear made specially for Dual Sport bikes. Primary busy comes from BMW owners. After I leave here it is off to Mount Washington to camp rain or shine. There will be no blog post the day after this ride until I reach wi-fi again. Leaving this area, I will begin my adventure down the Pacific Coast highway system.

June 10, 2013 planned route, Day 24

So this is a major route change and I'm spending day 2 that I saved in Alaska on Vancouver Island. The route below was a Road Runner Route out of a magazine and confirmed by a few locals in Vancouver. The left you see running west or left off the primary route, is suppose to be the best motorcycle road in Bristish Columbia. We shall see. June 8, 2013 planned route, Day 22

Screen Shot 2013-04-07 at 7.03.32 PMSo I’m here, the top of my Canadian route and it is now time to reverse course and head back to the lower 48 states of the United States. Here is a preview of the next 5 days that it will take me to reach Vancouver, Canada. There are some extra long days that I have laid out, one being 537 and one 649 and I figure by this time in my trip I should be seasoned. Meaning that I will be use to driving long legs, some in dirt which slow me down, so traveling on hard surface should make it easier to lay down miles.

Today the goal is to reverse course out of Inuvik and end up in Eagles Plain or further south if road conditions allow. There is also the fact that I have to consider and that is where I sleep if I do decide to pass by Eagles Plain, because from what I read, there is not much out here in these parts. Mileage goal today is 224 and that will give me a total of 8014 miles.

Total after today should be around, 7790 miles. I will also be crossing 3 rivers by ferry on this part of my adventure.
